Bringing painless coronavirus saliva testing to our homes
When we think about COVID-19 testing, the image that comes to our mind is a healthcare professional hidden behind a mask and globes, a swab in her hands and a very stressed patient waiting for the inevitable to happen. But it doesn’t need to be this way.
If we want consumers to widely adopt COVID-19 testing, a requirement to manage the current pandemic and slowly get back to normal life, we need to make the process painless, cost-effective, scalable and super simple. Something that you could do whilst watching your favourite TV show, without having to move from the comfort of your sofa. And without going all the way to the hospital, putting yourself, your family and our frontline healthcare workers at risk of infection.
The new Chronomics COVID-19 saliva testing kit allows you to do exactly that. Following a protocol so accurate it is used in hospitals across the world, and with the added benefit of detecting the presence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus from a simple saliva sample. Ann Johnson, one of the first people that tried this innovative approach for at-home COVID-19 testing, wanted to share her experience:
“I ordered a COVID-19 saliva kit for my son who was experiencing symptoms and who has a demanding front line job. We received the test early the next day. The kit was easy to use and within an hour we had it on its way back to your lab. The relief to us all in receiving his results the following day and knowing he had not tested positive for the virus were enormous. My daughter was able to return to work immediately without fear of having been infected and my son was back at his job within 48 hours in the confidence that whatever had caused him to feel unwell it was not COVID-19.”.
This COVID-19 test is useful to know if you, your family, your employees or your friends are currently infected with the virus. This could be the case even in the absence of symptoms (actually, a great proportion of the infected population may be asymptomatic). However, this test won’t be able to tell if you have been infected in the past or whether you can get infected in the future.
As governments react to this complex situation, we all have a responsibility to minimise the spread of COVID-19. By making testing much more accessible, we will together control the spread of the coronavirus.
